OUR HISTORY

THE EARLY YEARS

Greenway Equipment Sales began as Hancock Power Equipment in Ellsworth, Maine, in the early 1950s.  The original owners were Bob and Evelyn Vistica, and the business was located on the corner of Route 1A (Bangor Road) and Christian Ridge Road.  In the late ‘80s, the business was purchased by Bob Dow.  Within a few years, Bob bought land just down the road from the original location on Route 1A and built a new, larger and modern building.  The business became known as Greenway Equipment Sales.  In the early years, customers in Hancock County came to Greenway for Power King, Satoh, Woods, Land Pride, Kuhn, BCS, and American Wood Splitter, along with John Deere equipment.

SMITH FAMILY ASSUMES OWNERSHIP

In March of 1994, Greenway Equipment Sales was sold to the Smith family from Brewer.  Well-known for years in their family’s wholesale food business, Carl Smith Foods, which originated in Aroostook County, Carl “Rick” Smith, Jr. and his sons, Tyler and Mitchel, embarked upon a new career selling outdoor power equipment.  Tyler and Mitchel took charge of day-to-day operations, while Rick served in an advisory capacity.  All three remain in those roles today.

BANGOR LOCATION OPENS

In 1996, the Smiths opened their second dealership at 1216 Hammond Street in Bangor, recognizing the need to bring both sales and service of the John Deere brand to the Greater Bangor area.  Mitchel Smith took over the management of the Bangor location, which grew rapidly in the following years, resulting in a move just down the road to a larger building at 1270 Hammond Street in 1999.

CONTINUED GROWTH INTO THE NEW MILLENNIUM

Over the years, a number of lines were added.  For a brief period, Greenway sold Bombardier products, Ski-Doo and ATVs.  Ariens, Stihl and Honda, all well-known brands of outdoor power equipment, were added in both stores in the last ten years.  Mobile service trucks in Ellsworth and Bangor were put on the road to provide quick and convenient service throughout Hancock and Penobscot Counties and beyond.

In 2015, with the Bangor store and service departments bursting at the seams, Greenway moved a short distance out Hammond Street/Route 2 into a newly-renovated and much larger facility at the entrance to Freedom Park.  The large retail showroom displays all sizes of John Deere utility tractors up to 115 HP, lawn tractors and mowers, Gators, and Honda and Ariens snow blowers, in season.  In addition, customers will find Honda generators, a large section of Stihl hand-held outdoor power equipment, John Deere toys, clothing and accessories and a well-stocked parts department.  The service department was greatly expanded to keep up with demand and ensure a quicker turnaround on repairs.  Outside, the expansive lot is lined with rows of John Deere tractors, mowers, Gators, various attachments and an area dedicated to used equipment.  All lines are also found in the Ellsworth location, offering convenience to customers in Hancock and Washington Counties.

OUR PEOPLE

Under the leadership of the Smith family, Greenway Equipment Sales has grown to employ more than thirty employees between the two locations, many of whom have been with the company for fifteen to twenty years.  Employees are the backbone of the business and Greenway takes pride in offering their people continued, quality training through John Deere and other vendors.
